Vive La France!

Face paints: Happy Bastille Day!
Bonne fĂȘte nationale!
Saturday evening was when the French come out in droves in Sydney to celebrate their beloved 14 juillet, in honour of the storming of the Bastille back in 1789.

Can you can-can?

Sydney has a massive French expat population (all the beaches and gorgeous weather here, who could possibly resist?!) and they all celebrated on Saturday night at the Argyle. The courtyard was decked out in little French flags, girls walking around looking women in the Revolution, and people wearing those funny-looking hats and lots and lots of berets. For dinner, the typical Australia food menu consisting of wagyu beef burgers and wedges with sour cream and sweet chili sauce were Frenchified to hambourgeois and moules frites. Outside the crepes were coming fresh off the grill and the Bordeaux was pouring. A troupe of Frenchy dancers came out around 9pm and did a can-can rendition to some fun French music. I thought I would be originale and wear a striped top, red skirt and blue beret. Little did I know that half the 1800 people who turned up would be wearing the exact same combination!!
It was wonderful to meet so many French, ask what they're doing out here in Australia and where they come from back in France. A few asked where I was from in France! ....until they heard my stark American accent and quickly corrected themselves. Francophiles unite!
